## Why Remove Image Metadata?

Every photo you take carries hidden data with it. Your phone records the exact GPS coordinates of the shot, your camera writes its serial number into every file, and editing software adds creator notes and version history. Share the file directly — by email, cloud link or as an attachment — and all of it travels along. Removing metadata before sharing protects your home address, your identity and your gear from anyone who knows where to look. If you first want to see what a photo reveals, open it in the [Metadata Viewer](/tools/metadata-viewer).

## Privacy Check

Deleting metadata should not be an act of faith. The built-in Privacy Check rates every file as Safe or Warning before removal, and after cleaning it reads the file again to confirm that GPS location, serial numbers, timestamps and editing traces are really gone. You download a clean copy and can see exactly how many tags and bytes were removed.

## How to Remove Metadata from a Photo?

## What Metadata Gets Removed?

### GPS Location

Latitude, longitude and altitude of the spot where the photo was taken — the most sensitive data a photo can carry, since it can point directly to your home or workplace.

### EXIF Camera Data

Camera make and model, lens, ISO, aperture, shutter speed, flash and the exact capture date — the complete EXIF block written by every camera and phone.

### Serial Numbers & Owner Data

Body and lens serial numbers, owner name, artist and copyright fields that can tie a photo to you or your gear.

### Software & Edit History

Editing software names, version history, ratings and develop settings written by tools like Lightroom and Photoshop into XMP records.

### Embedded Previews

Hidden thumbnail and preview images embedded in the file, which can still show the original photo even after you crop or edit it.

### Timestamps & Color Profile

Capture, digitization and modification timestamps. The ICC color profile is kept by default so colors stay identical, but you can remove it too if you want a fully stripped file.

## Frequently Asked Questions

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. The metadata remover runs entirely in your browser and your files are never transmitted anywhere. You can verify this yourself by opening the network tab of your browser while using the tool. There is nothing for us to store and nothing to delete.

Does removing metadata reduce image quality?

No. Removal only rewrites the metadata sections of the file — the image data is never recompressed, so the pixels of the cleaned file are identical to the original. The ICC color profile is kept by default so colors display exactly the same everywhere.

What metadata does the remover delete?

Everything personal: GPS coordinates, EXIF camera settings, capture dates, serial numbers, owner and artist fields, IPTC captions, XMP edit history, editing software traces and embedded preview thumbnails. You can remove it all in one click or open the settings and pick only specific categories, such as GPS location alone.

Can I remove only the GPS location?

Yes. Open the settings next to the Clean Up button and toggle off Remove All. You can then delete only the GPS location, serial numbers and owner data, timestamps, software traces or embedded previews — and keep the rest, for example the camera settings you want to show off.

Does it work with RAW files like NEF or CR2?

Yes. GPS coordinates, artist, copyright and capture dates are deleted from NEF, CR2, CR3, ARW, DNG and other RAW formats, while some camera-protected fields are kept so the file still works in RAW converters. For a fully clean file, convert the RAW to JPG first and then remove its metadata.

Why should I remove metadata before sharing photos?

A photo shared as a file can reveal the GPS coordinates of your home, your camera's serial number, your name in the owner field and the exact time the picture was taken. Anyone with a metadata viewer can read this in seconds. Removing metadata before sharing closes that door without changing how the photo looks.

Doesn't Instagram or WhatsApp remove metadata for me?

Social platforms like Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp strip most metadata on upload — but email attachments, cloud drive links, messaging apps in document mode and your own website do not. Whenever the original file travels, its metadata travels too, so clean it yourself before sending.

Does removing metadata reduce the file size?

Slightly, yes. Metadata typically takes up a few kilobytes, and embedded preview thumbnails can add much more. The tool shows you exactly how many bytes were removed from each file. The visible image itself stays untouched.

Can I remove metadata from multiple photos at once?

Yes. Drop as many photos as you want — each one gets its own privacy rating, and you can remove metadata from every file and download the cleaned copies. Because your files are processed on your own device, there is no file size cap either, so even a full shoot of large RAW files works.

How can I verify the metadata is really gone?

The tool does it for you: after cleaning, it reads the file again and shows a verified Clean rating listing what was removed. You can also re-open the downloaded copy in the [metadata viewer](/tools/metadata-viewer) at any time to double-check it yourself.
