## What Is Image Metadata?

Every digital photo contains an invisible layer of information called metadata. Your camera records the model, lens and exposure settings, your phone adds GPS coordinates, and editing software leaves version history and creator notes. This data is stored inside the file and it travels with the photo wherever you send it. That is useful for organizing an archive or proving authorship, but it can also reveal more than you intend, such as your home address or your camera's serial number.

## Privacy Check

You should not need to read hundreds of tags to know if a photo is safe to share. The Privacy Check rates every file as Safe or Warning and lists exactly what it reveals, from GPS location and device serial numbers to timestamps and editing software. If something looks risky, one click deletes the metadata and gives you a clean copy of the photo.

## What Metadata Can You See?

### EXIF Data

Camera make and model, lens, ISO, aperture, shutter speed, flash and the exact capture date. EXIF is written by every camera and phone, which makes it the most common metadata you will find in a photo.

### GPS Location

Latitude, longitude and altitude of the spot where the photo was taken. The viewer shows the coordinates on a map so you can see the location at a glance.

### IPTC Fields

Captions, keywords, creator name, credit line and copyright notices. IPTC data is used by newsrooms, stock agencies and photo archives.

### XMP Data

Edit history, software used, ratings and labels written by tools like Lightroom and Photoshop. XMP also stores develop settings for RAW files.

### ICC Profile

The embedded color profile that controls how the colors of your image are displayed on different screens.

### MakerNotes

Proprietary camera data such as body and lens serial numbers, focus points and shutter count. Few EXIF viewers can decode these fields.

## FAQs

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. The metadata viewer runs entirely in your browser and your files are never transmitted anywhere. You can verify this yourself by opening the network tab of your browser while using the tool. There is nothing for us to store and nothing to delete.

What is EXIF data?

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is the standard that cameras and phones use to record technical details inside a photo: camera model, lens, ISO, aperture, shutter speed, capture date and often GPS coordinates. Almost every JPG, HEIC or RAW file contains EXIF data, and it stays in the file when you share the photo directly.

Why does my photo show no GPS location?

There are three common reasons. Location services were disabled when the photo was taken, the photo is a screenshot or edited export that never contained GPS data, or the photo was shared through a platform like Instagram or WhatsApp, which strip metadata on upload. Photos sent as files, for example as email attachments, usually keep their metadata.

Which file formats are supported?

The viewer reads JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, AVIF, TIFF, GIF and JPEG XL, plus RAW formats including NEF, CR2, CR3, ARW, DNG, RAF, ORF and RW2\. Metadata removal supports the same formats, including RAW files, which most online tools cannot clean at all.

Can I remove metadata without losing image quality?

Yes. Removal only rewrites the metadata sections of the file. The image data is never recompressed, so the pixels of the cleaned file are identical to the original. You can also keep the ICC color profile so colors display exactly the same everywhere.

Does it work with RAW files like NEF or CR2?

Yes, you can view the complete metadata of RAW files, including MakerNotes. When removing metadata from a RAW file, GPS coordinates, artist, copyright and capture dates are deleted, while some camera-protected fields are kept so the file still works in RAW converters. For a fully clean file, convert the RAW to JPG first and then remove its metadata.

Do all photos contain EXIF data?

No. Screenshots and most graphics have little or no EXIF data, some image formats such as GIF barely support it, and photos downloaded from social media have usually been stripped by the platform. Photos straight from a camera or phone almost always contain EXIF data.

Is there a file size limit?

No. Because your files are processed on your own device instead of being uploaded, there is no file size cap. Most online metadata viewers stop at 50 or 100 MB, which rules out RAW files. Here you can check a full shoot of large RAW files at once.

Can I check multiple photos at once?

Yes. Drop as many photos as you want and each one gets its own report and privacy rating. You can remove metadata from all files in one click and download the cleaned copies.

Can EXIF data be trusted?

Not completely. Metadata can be edited or faked with common software, so a capture date or camera model is a strong hint rather than proof. If you need to verify authenticity, combine metadata with other checks such as Content Credentials or the original file from the camera.

Does removing metadata reduce the file size?

Slightly, yes. Metadata typically takes up a few kilobytes, and embedded preview thumbnails can add much more. The tool shows you exactly how many bytes were removed from each file. The visible image itself stays untouched.
